CASH-strapped mums are turning to traditional cloth nappies to slash $80 a month from their bills.
The shift to using disposable nappies over 30 years is finally beginning to reverse, says the Australian Nappy Network.
The network claimed yesterday the global credit crunch was forcing the change. Network director Lucy Westerman said small nappy-making businesses were booming as stay-at-home mothers tried to stretch the household budget.
"The financial savings of reusables are massive," she said.
Ms Westerman said by the time a baby was toilet-trained it would have used between 4000 and 6000 nappies at a cost for disposables of $2500 a year. "Disposables are up to eight times more expensive."
Castle Hill mother Artemiss Keyhani discovered cloth nappies six months ago for her daughter Phoenix, 1, and hasn't looked back.
" We thought cloth nappies used too much water. Now we know more water goes into disposables."
